Farmer kept tiny ducklings in the sink to protect them from cold

Although many people choose to keep a rubber duck in the bath, a farmer has taken the concept a little further and decided to keep a full brood of ducklings in his sink.

The ducklings were rescued by a farmer who feared they could die in the cold after they hatched six months earlier than usual.

To give them somewhere to swim around, the farmer kept the ducklings in the bathroom sink until they could be taken by the local animal rescue centre.

They have now been moved to Somerset’s Secret World Animal Rescue Centre, where they will live until the weather warms up in March.

Jim Carrey has switched on the Christmas lights in Oxford Street along with a host of other celebrities.

The actor, who plays Scrooge in an upcoming performance capture-adaptation of A Christmas Carol, was joined in London by Peter Andre, The Saturdays and Spandau Ballet.

Carrey told a source: "It feels great to be a part of all this tradition.

"I want to thank the people of Britain for the legacy of Charles Dickens and the chance to tell this story. This story couldn't be more important now - it's about the immorality of greed."

Carrey's fellow cast members Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins switched on the lights at Regent Street and St Paul's Cathedral respectively.

Firth said of the lights: "Well I think it's all a bit tacky and over-the-top quite frankly, but why not? That's what Christmas is all about."

Simon Cowell 'prays twins won't win'

Simon Cowell has reportedly said that he is praying X Factor twins John and Edward Grimes do not win this year's show.

The reality talent boss nevertheless said that he had to accept the decision of the public who vote for their favourite singers, The Mirror reports.

Cowell said: "The twins are completely deluded and live in fantasy land but they are lovely. They thought Britney Spears would watch their performance and wanted to invite Robbie Williams to their party.

"I'm praying John and Edward don't win but there are reports they might be in the lead. You have to live with a public vote."

He added: "If they win it would be a complete disaster. I would get on a plane and leave the country then sulk for about six months and Louis will be in serious trouble. The fact is, it's a singing competition, and they can't sing.

"We've got to raise the game now and explain it is a singing competition. Danyl Johnson is back on Saturday to prove a point."

Cowell also admitted that the judges had held crisis talks after last week's show, adding: "I thought Saturday's show and songs were not as good as I expected and we have to dig a bit deeper. It was a pep talk."

Cheryl Cole's debut solo single 'Fight For This Love' is on course to be the fastest-selling single of the year so far.

Man claims toy spiders could kill him

A North Yorkshire man has announced that he will be staying indoors on Halloween because he fears the day could kill him.

John Stafford, from Scarborough, suffers from an extreme case of arachnophobia and has been told that he could suffer a fatal heart attack if he sees toy spiders on October 31.

Reports suggest that the 54-year-old has already collapsed once this month after he spotted joke spiders in a store window while he was out shopping.

Stafford told the Yorkshire Post: "When I tell shop owners about it they think it's funny, but it's not a laughing matter. I stop breathing and pass out, it's just terrifying.

"My doctor said that my heart is so badly bruised now that a bad attack could be fatal"

Calling for a ban on Halloween displays in shops, he complained: "It's just thoughtless - they don't realise the effect they can have on people."

Meanwhile, his wife Maria, 44, said: "The other day we saw a window in Eastborough that had some spiders and I thought I'd nearly lost him. He just slumped and fell against me - I had to hit him with my keys to bring him round."

Stafford has reportedly tried hypnosis and medication to combat his problem, but to no avail.

Winnie the Pooh returns for new children's adventure

Children's literature favourite Winnie the Pooh is back in a new adventure with trusty sidekicks Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore -- but also a new friend.

The stories featuring the absent-minded, honey-loving bear and his friends were originally created by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard.

The last collection, "The House At Pooh Corner", came out in 1928 and the stories are available in around 50 languages around the world.

But now author David Benedictus and illustrator Mark Burgess have penned a new volume of 10 stories, "Return To The Hundred Acre Wood and features a new character -- Lottie The Otter.

"Lottie has her own very definite ideas about how things should be done. She believes that one must always follow the correct etiquette," said Benedictus, adding that she embodies Pooh's values of "friendship and adventure."

Milne
based the original stories on his son Christopher Robin's stuffed toy collection and also put the boy himself in the stories.

The tales unfold in Hundred Acre Wood, supposedly inspired by a forest near Milne's home in East Sussex, southern England.

Louis Walsh 'fears X Factor curse'

X Factor judge Louis Walsh fears that he is finally facing the consequences of Johnny Rocco's curse, a report claims.

Retired gardener Rocco, 69, issued a warning to Walsh at auditions in Manchester two years ago after being mocked by the Irish judge. As well as mumbling in Italian to the boyband manager, he said: "Remember the name Johnny Rocco."

According to the Daily Star, Walsh now blames Rocco after being hit by a run of bad luck as he filmed his judges' houses stage in Italy recently.

It is thought that the star lost his luggage and found himself caught in thunder and lightning on arrival in Milan. Additionally, his contestants were reportedly left stranded near Lake Como after he was banned from taking a boat to join them due to the poor weather conditions.

A source said: "Louis could quite literally have been sleeping with the fishes if they had allowed the boat to sail."

The insider added: "Louis didn't take Johnny's threat seriously at first but now he is really wondering if it could be real."

Responding to the rumours, Rocco said: "Louis has at last had his just desserts. He messed with me and bad-mouthed me and now he's paid the price. Maybe this will stop people like him judging me so quickly and being so nasty."

Emergency services were on hand, though were not utilised following the accident.
A spokeswoman for the show confirmed that May escaped without injuries, saying: "Viewers will have to wait until the next series to find out what happens."

Organisers have said that a record number of people attended this year's Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon in North Beach, California on Sunday.

The fourth such event saw a range of breeds competing for the top prize, the Daily Mail reports.

President of the Helen Woodward Animal Centre Michael Arms said: "It just doesn't get any greater than San Diego showing its love for
dogs and its love for surfing.

"What could be more fun than playing with your dog in the water?"

He estimated that nearly 4,000 people came to watch the surfing at the annual spectacle, doubling last year's attendance.
Money raised from the event is used to send staff from the animal centre on trips as educators, while next year organisers hope to make the contest an international one.

Hammond 'still recovering from crash'

Richard Hammond has said that he is still recovering from the injuries sustained in his high-speed car crash three years ago.

The presenter told Top Gear Magazine that reading about Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa's recent accident reminded him of his own experience.

Hammond said: "I damaged the front of my brain in my crash in 2006 and the thought of someone else having to set off on the lengthy journey to recovery from such an injury was a glum one.

"But every time I read that Massa hopes to return to racing in
F1 soon after sustaining that head injury, I'll admit that my shoulders slump a bit. I know that for me, three years later, the process is still ongoing."

Massa suffered a fractured skull when he was hit by a spring from another vehicle during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix in July.

Simon Cowell: 'I would have rejected Ringo'

Simon Cowell has suggested that The Beatles would struggle to make it past the first phases of his reality talent shows with their complete lineup intact.

Speaking to Amanda Holden on CBS's The Early Show, Cowell joked that he would knock back Ringo Starr and only accept John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

Holden asked: "If the Beatles came on Britain's Got Talent or American Idol, do you think you would have put them through to boot camp?"

Cowell replied: "I think we would have said, 'We'll take those three but we'll probably lose the drummer'. Ringo, I'm afraid, it's bad news."

The Beatles have been tipped to dominate this week's album charts following yesterday's release of their remastered back catalogue.

Liam Gallagher has reportedly revealed to a waiter that there is no chance of him returning to Oasis.

The star informed Vincenzo Della Corte of his decision not to rejoin the band while on holiday in Italy, The Mirror reports.

The 32-year-old waiter told the newspaper: "I had to ask him what the future was and he said it was all over and there was no way he would get back with Noel.

"He said that Noel had his style of music and he had his and they would be going their separate ways."

Della Corte added that Gallagher was very down-to-earth, saying: "You hear all these stories about Oasis being real rock and rollers but Liam was really polite and was very happy to talk.

Robin Williams to play Susan Boyle?

The Scottish singer shot to fame after wowing the world with her performances in ITV show Britain's Got Talent earlier this year. While there have been rumours about a biopic being planned, no one would have guessed they would want the Mrs Doubtfire star to play the lead.

Talking to the Daily Star, he said, "I've been asked if I want to play Susan in the movie. I think she's incredible. That clip of her singing on Britain's Got Talent was extraordinary. So inspiring. It was quite a shock when she began to sing.

"She's got a really great voice."

Leonardo DiCaprio loses weight for movie

The 34-year-old actor has embarked on a new diet and exercise regime to help shed the pounds ahead of a fight sequence for action movie 'Inception'.

"Leonardo needs to shed at least 30lbs. He's gained weight recently and looks almost a bit flabby, which isn't good, especially as the camera adds pounds. "There's an action scene coming up at the end of the year in which he needs to appear emaciated, so the pressure is on," said a source.

Although Leonardo - who plays Jacob Hastley in the film, which is about an officer worker who becomes involved in a blackmail scandal - is finding it hard to cut out calorific treats, he is determined to be in top shape for the scene.

The movie source said: "He is following a strict diet and is embarking on a rigorous workout regime. Leonardo is a pretty determined kind of guy, when he sets his mind to things he always achieves them. Though this is going to be hard for him, you can guarantee he'll succeed."

Cowell will 'give up X Factor in three years'

The music mogul allegedly admitted that he almost walked away from the X-Factor several years ago, but was persuaded to stay by contestant Leona Lewis.

"A couple of years ago I was not sure I wanted to carry on," Cowell told The Mirror. "It's a lot to juggle - making the shows, being on them - so I had to think twice about it. I think Leona Lewis probably changed my mind. She reminded me why we do this.

"Leona is the reason I decided to stay on two more years. She made it worthwhile again."

He added: "Three years and that's it - I will do what I've always done. I run a record label, I run a TV company, we're making movies now - I love that part of my life.

"I probably get more satisfaction from making a show than being on a show. I've been lucky, but I also know not to outstay my welcome."

Downey Jr: 'I want my own superhero suit'

Robert Downey Jr. has said that he is annoyed with his Iron Man bosses because they won't make him his own superhero suit.

The 44-year-old actor, who plays industrialist Tony Stark and his metal-clad alter ego in the movies, was apparently told he could have his own version of the costume to take home with him, but is still waiting.

He said: "The producers keep telling me that they're going to give me a suit with all the bells and whistles but I still don't have it. I don't know, maybe I should get it in my contract. It would be great to have one at home - a talking point."
Downey continued: "I suppose it would be a case of worshipping false idols, which I don't have any trouble with as long as the idol is made in my image!"

Russell Crowe is a real life Robin Hood

The 45-year-old actor took a break from shooting upcoming film 'Robin Hood' in Sunningdale, Berkshire, to visit a Cancer Research store where he spoke to staff before handing over the generous sum.

A volunteer said: "We couldn't believe it when Russell Crowe came in and gave us the money. We knew he was in the area and we were all hoping to see him, but we never thought we would get quite so close to him. "We were all a bit star-struck, but it was lovely to meet him and he stopped and took the time to speak to us."

Russell has been very generous with his money recently. Last month, the star gave staff at a Welsh pub a £600 tip to thank them for preparing dinner for him and nine friends.

One worker said: "Now if anyone badmouths him I tell them to shut up. He could have paid and just left but they stayed instead and entertained us."Then he paid us that tip - it's the last thing you expect. He seemed quite friendly and chatty like a really nice guy."
