Ronson slams Noel

Mark Ronson has responded to snide remarks that Noel Gallagher made about him in recent Radio 1 interview.

As well as criticising Kaiser Chiefs, Scouting For Girls and Amy Winehouse on Chris Moyles' breakfast show, Gallagher said Ronson "needs to learn three chords on the guitar and write a tune, instead of ruining everyone else's".

However, Ronson – who has produced both Winehouse and the Kaiser Chiefs – had a few words to say on the subject on his MySpace blog.

"Noel Gallagher said I should 'learn three chords on the guitar and go write a tune'," he wrote.

"So I just wanted him to know that I'm actually taking guitar lessons from Jay-Z right now and he's already taught me both chords to Wonderwall."

He added that he also wrote a song called Back To Black, which "has seven chords in it."

Gallagher caused controversy earlier this year when he said that Jay-Z and hip hop had no rightful place at the Glastonbury Festival.

Dannii planning to welcome Cheryl

Dannii Minogue has said she intends to make new X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole feel welcome on the show, despite rumours of a feud between the two.

The Girls Aloud singer has made disparaging remarks about Dannii's cosmetic surgery in the past, suggesting the Aussie star may have gone over the top with her ops.

"I think she should get all her plastic surgery reduced. She doesn’t look natural," she said.

"I don’t think men find her attractive."

However, Dannii says she is not going to make an issue of any such comments, noting that Cheryl is still upset over the revelations of husband Ashley's cheating.

"Cheryl's been through a very tough time, so I went to her dressing room on the first day of filming to introduce myself and wish her luck.

"She was so nervous - her hands were shaking."

Cole was brought in to replace Sharon Osbourne, who quit the show recently in a row over pay.

Carol Vorderman quits Countdown over pay row

Carol Vorderman has announced she is quitting the Channel 4 gameshow Countdown after she was asked to take a per 90 cent pay cut

She has been the resident maths whiz on the show since it began in 1982 with original host Richard Whiteley.

However, Vorderman was reportedly "extremely sad" when current host Des O’ Connor announced last week that he is quitting in November.

The row over pay was apparently the final straw for Carol, with her agent John Miles confirming she was told the show could "easily survive without you" if she refused to accept the new deal.

"I was stunned that my client's 26 loyal years were discarded in such a cavalier manner," Mr Miles said.

She said in a statement: "I am devastated that my joyous time with one of the best programmes on TV has ended this way,"

Countdown was the first programme to air on Channel 4 in 1982.

Des O' Connor to quit Countdown

Des O' Connor has announced he is to quit as the host of Channel 4 show Countdown in November.

The veteran TV star took over from Des Lynam in January last year, who left after hosting just one series of the show.

However, O Connor has said he misses the "thrill" of performing live TV shows and concerts.

Speaking about his stint on the long-running word game, he said: "It's been wonderful hosting a programme which is part of TV folklore. I have really enjoyed my two years with the show and I would like to thank all concerned at Channel 4.

"I've made a lot of new friends. Carol Vorderman has been a joy... it's been a giggle since day one. But I miss the thrill of stepping out on a live stage for the one-man concerts and the challenge of live TV entertainment-based shows."

Des, 76, is currently recording his 36th album Setting New Standards.

Amy's new waxwork unveiled

A waxwork of singer Amy Winehouse has been unveiled at Madame Tussauds in London.

The model was constructed using photos and images taken from her live performances and sports the star's trademark beehive hairdo and old school tattoos.

Amy's parents, Mitch and Jan, were present when the waxwork was uncovered, describing it as an "incredible likeness", but Mitch added that "she's not that skinny anymore".

He even joked that the new version was less unlikely to display the notoriously erratic behaviour of his daughter.

"We're going to take this one home with us and take the real one back. This one does what she's told and doesn't move," he said.

He went on to say that Amy is currently undergoing a drug replacement programme and added that she is "doing really well".

Amy's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil has just been sentenced to 27 months in prison for assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Fearne Cotton 'addicted to tattoos'

TV presenter Fearne Cotton has been speaking of her fondness for body art, claiming to be addicted to tattoos.

The 26-year-old said she would like to have designs "all over my whole body" if she wasn't on TV, but joked that she has yet to tell her mother about how may she already has.

Speaking to Glamour magazine, the blonde presenter said: "I got a new one in Los Angeles, it covers most of my back at the bottom and it's a 50s pin-up mermaid, lovely boobs, beautiful.

"I love Amy Winehouse's tattoos but I can't do arms. I can't do 'Children In Need' with a naked chick on my arm, can I?"

She added that she has experienced pressure to be a little "more conservative" in the past, but that she prefers to stick to her "quirky look".

Ms Cotton recently claimed she looked "like an egg" when not wearing make-up, reports Digital Spy.

We won't give away music, says Gallagher

Noel Gallagher has said he has no intention of following Radiohead's lead by releasing Oasis music for free.

Oasis' new album Dig Out Your Soul is due to be release in October, but Noel told BBC 6 Music that he will not be adopting a similar strategy to Thom Yorke's band

"I wouldn't have thought so. That's not our bag," he said.

"I didn't spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America, and the most expensive graphic designer in London to then give it away. F*** that."

He went on to say that Radiohead's approach was a good way of getting free marketing, but praised them for being "rebels and outsiders".

The new Oasis single The Shock Of The Lightning is scheduled for release on 29th September.

Gallagher recently claimed to be a fan of Jay-Z, following the rapper's much publicised appearance at Glastonbury.

Ne-Yo knocks Coldplay from top spot

Ne-Yo has knocked Coldplay from the top of the singles chart with his track Closer.

The song overtook sales for Coldplay's single Viva La Vida to give the US singer-songwriter his second number one in the UK.

Viva La Vida, the second single from the album of the same name, went straight to the top of the charts last week on downloads alone.

Elsewhere, Jordin Sparks was the highest new entry with his single No Air, while Chris Brown's song Forever climbed one place to number four.

The album charts saw the top three remain static, with Coldplay, Duffy and Neil Diamond staying put, while Darren Styles' Skydivin' went straight in at number four.

In related news, Coldplay are planning to give away a free song on their winter tour.

The band wants to give away an unreleased track to fans who have bought a ticket for the UK shows, reports the BBC.

Eavis says Noel Gallagher can take a joke

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis thinks Noel Gallagher will be able to take a joke after Jay-Z poked fun at his comments onstage.

The superstar rapper entered to a backing tape of the Oasis star's suggestions that hip hop does not belong at the event, following up with a rendition of their hit song Wonderwall.

However, Eavis was confident that Gallagher would be able to take such antics in his stride.

"Jay-Z's intro tape was great, wasn't it?" he said.

"Noel can take it, they're tough fellas, aren't they? They used to work on a building site, didn't they? They can handle it. They're good friends of ours though, they've helped us a lot in the past the Gallagher brothers, I'm not going to slag them off.

Eavis claimed the rapper's performance proved the doubters wrong, declaring it "a real triumph".

The Verve drew the festival to a close last night with their headline slot on the Pyramid Stage.

The couple have been married for seven years and have three children – seven-year-old son Rocco, two-year-old adopted son David Banda and 11-year-old daughter Lourdes from Madonna's previous relationship with dancer Carlos Leon.

She is due to begin her Sticky and Sweet tour in Cardiff in August, but the couple are expected to officially announce the split after the final concerts have taken place in Mexico.

It has been rumoured that the pair have been having difficulties for the last two years.

"They're obviously sad but they're dealing with it like grown-ups," said a friend of the couple.

"Things have run their natural course. [But] although the marriage is coming to an end, they don't want to say anything until the tour is over."

Naomi Campbell charged over airport incident

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been charged with five offences after being arrested for clashing with a police officer at Heathrow last month.

The highly-strung 37-year-old was held at the beleaguered Terminal 5 in April after a row broke out with airline staff who informed her some of her baggage had been lost.

Consequently, the police were called and Campbell was handcuffed and led off the plane, before being released on bail.

She answered bail at Heathrow police station yesterday (May 29th) and was charged with three counts of assaulting a police officer, an offence of disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress and one count of threatening or abusive behaviour towards a cabin crew member.

A spokesman for British Airways said last month: "All incidents of abusive or disruptive behaviour towards fellow passengers or staff are taken extremely seriously and will not be tolerated."

Ms Campbell was sentenced to community service in New York last year after being convicted of assault.

Michael Sophocles fired from Apprentice

Telesales executive Michael Sophocles has been fired by Sir Alan Sugar in the tycoon's hit TV show The Apprentice.

The 24-year-old was given the boot after his Renaissance team were trounced in a supercar rental task.

Rival Lee McQueen and his Team Alpha made over £11,000 by renting cars to London businessmen as a result of their risky decision to offer a Pagani Zonda - which could be rented for a daily charge of £2,700.

Sophocles had been expected to attract plenty of custom with his Ferrari, but lack of direction and naivety about cars let him down and he failed to make a single sale.

In his exit interview with the BBC, Sophocles said he thought his time to be fired had come three weeks previously.

"I was almost like a dead man walking," he said.

"I'd run my course and the five people who are in the final five deserve to be there."

Indiana Jones pulls in the crowds at Cannes

he A-list stars were out in force at the Cannes premiere of the fourth Indiana Jones film, with director Steven Spielberg hinting there could yet be a fifth movie in the franchise.

Harrison Ford, reprising his role as the adventurous archeologist Dr Jones, appeared on the red carpet with his co-stars Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone and Shia LeBoeuf.

Mr Spielberg said public demand had led to the return of the character, adding that this may not be the last that audiences see of the explorer.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "If you want more of them, we'll have our ear to the ground to hear what happens and will decide where we go from here."

It is almost 20 years since Ford appeared in the last Indy movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which has led to criticism from some quarters that he is too old for the role

The movie opens here in the UK on Thursday May 22nd.

Making new Star Trek movie was 'thrilling', says director

The new Star Trek movie will not compare to anything avid fans have seen before, its director has claimed.

JJ Abrams – the brains behind hit Channel 4 show Lost – said he expects to attract a whole new generation of Trekkies to the exploits of the Starship Enterprise.

Speaking to the Associated Press about the eleventh Star Trek flick, he remarked: "It was an opportunity to take what I think has been a maligned world - to sound crass, a franchise - and treat it in a way that made it something that I wanted to see."

He continued: "To take the characters, the thoughtfulness, the personalities, the sense of adventure, the idea of humanity working together, the sense of social commentary and innovation, all that stuff - to take it and apply it in a way that felt genuinely thrilling."

Opening across the pond on May 28th next year, the movie sees old favourites Captain James T Kirk, Dr McCoy and Mr Spock in their formative years at Starfleet Academy.

Director Abrams concluded by suggesting that the film is intended for people who are "completely enamoured" with Star Trek, as well as "fans of movies, not fans of Star Trek necessarily".

Doherty thanks Thatcher as he leaves the clink

Musician Pete Doherty walked free from prison today saying he was drug-free and handing a sarcastic 'thank you' to Margaret Thatcher.

The 29-year-old Babyshambles singer walked out of Wormwood Scrubs prison in London early in the morning dressed in suit and tie and carrying his belongings in a duffel bag.

He had just finished serving 29 days of a 14-week sentence for breaching his probation and was greeted by throngs of reporters and photographers.

Doherty was heard uttering: "Thank you Mrs Thatcher for putting me in the company of the most dangerous criminals in the country."

He also showed waiting reporters a certificate saying he had passed a drugs test while locked up.

His freedom means he can now play at Glastonbury Festival in Somerset next month.

Reporters later caught up with Doherty at his rented home in Wiltshire where he was seen relaxing in more cosy surroundings.

He reportedly said he was looking forward to a rum and coke and seeing his pet cats after his spell inside.

In October 2007 he had been given a suspended sentence for drug and driving offences, and landed in hot water again after missing a probation appointment.

Kidman signs up for Dusty movie gig

Hollywood heavyweight Nicole Kidman has been signed up to star as songstress Dusty Springfield in a film of her life.

Although the project is yet to be given a title, it will see the ex-wife of Tom Cruise team up once again with Michael Cunningham, the Pulitzer-prize winning writer of The Hours.

Speaking at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, the author said Springfield is "clearly going into history with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones", New York Magazine reports.

As well as starring as the British music legend, Moulin Rouge star Nicole will produce the feature through her Blossom Films company.

Dubbed the White Queen of Soul, Dusty's success was overshadowed by her problems with drugs and alcohol, as well as her struggles with mental illness.

Her record sales experienced a resurgence after Quentin Tarantino used Son of a Preacher Man on the soundtrack for Pulp Fiction.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995 and succumbing to it four years later, Dusty has since been credited as an influence and inspiration for current chart stars Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele.

Tina Turner to tour for first time in years

Tina Turner is to embark on her first tour in eight years in the autumn, kicking off in Kansas City.

The big-haired songstress will begin the shows in North America, but reports suggest she may add dates in Europe and around the world.

Tina made the revelation while recording an appearance on Oprah Winfrey's show, in front of an audience of 4,000.

She is expected to make an official announcement when the show airs next week, with tickets likely to be on sale by May 12th.

The star performed with Beyonce last February at the Grammy's, where she was introduced on stage simply as "the queen".

Her last tour in 2000 was said to be her last, and grossed $110 million (£55 million). At the time, it was the top-selling tour by a female artist, although this record has since been topped by Madonna and Cher.

A Wii Product Review

Note: Sorry this item is currently in short supply. All orders placed will be delayed for 10 - 12 weeks.

Great product,

Wii TreeHaving gained a few pounds over the years and as someone who finds exercise boring I took a bit of a flyer on the wii fit. Now having used it for a weekend I can confirm the product is fantastic; best £70 I have ever spent - It simply makes exercise a real laugh. You can hoola hoop, go jogging, ski jump, do a bit of yoga, practice your football heading - but watch out if you are rubbish, you'll get a few teddies and football boots thrown at you for good measure!

Wii BoardOn a more serious note the board calculates your BMI works out your weight and is intuitive to ensure you don't over do it. It also tracks your progress and makes recommendations on how you might help yourself to get fitter. Plus don't worry if you don't want others knowing all your personal details (such as your weight), you can password protect your details so only you can see them.

Wii Fit BoxIn short its a great product that makes exercise fun and will (if you let them) have the rest of the family in stitches as they watch you go ass over tip on the ski jump, or get smacked in the head with a football boot.

Well done Nintendo, another product that it well worthy of the hype - and there's not many of those these days.

Other authors noted at the event included novelist Ian McEwan, who won the Galaxy Book of the Year award for his tragedy On Chesil Beach as well as the award for Reader's Digest Author of the Year.

Gordon Brown said of Ms Rowling's accomplishments: "She has joined a distinguished line of British authors whose work has got the whole country reading, and whose books will be read for many years to come by successive generations."

Ms Rowling said of the honour: "I haven't been pensioned off just yet with a Lifetime Achievement Award", which was given to thriller write John Grisham last year.

Who's a ratings winner for the Beeb

The BBC's new series of Doctor Who has proved to be a ratings success among British audiences.

Saturday night saw around 8.4 million viewers settle into their sofas to catch up with David Tennant and new sidekick Catherine Tate.

Although previous instalments of the Time Lord's adventures had been screened at around 19:00 BST, the first show in the new run was shown at 18:15.

Queer as Folk's Russell T Davies – now at the helm of his fourth Dr Who series – had criticised the new slot, but was proved wrong when Saturday night's episode grabbed a 39.4 per cent audience share and scooped the top spot in the evening's ratings battle.

"This is a great start for the new series of Doctor Who," remarked a BBC spokesperson.

Pointing out that comedienne Tate had successfully reprised her 2006 Christmas special role as Donna Noble, the representative continued: "The show kicked off a fantastic night of family entertainment on BBC1, which pulled in big audiences across the evening."

Other ratings winners this weekend included the BBC's Casualty, which pulled in 7.1 million viewers, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's new talent show I'd Do Anything, which had 6.8 million fans putting on the kettle and snuggling up on the sofa.

Soft beds 'better for people with lower back pain'

For anyone who ever suffers from lower back pain, sleeping on a softer mattress that adapts to the body's shape could relieve you of pain and provide you with a better night's sleep.

While many people may think that it is better to sleep on a hard mattress or on the floor if suffering from a sore back, researchers found that this is something of a myth and that doing so can actually make pain worse.

Writing in the new edition of medical journal Spine, they explained that they had tested 160 patients with chronic lower back pain using three different types of beds for one month - a waterbed, a body-conforming foam mattress, and a firm futon mattress without springs.

Those on the softer mattresses were able to sleep longer and witnessed significant reductions in their back pain, while those sleeping on the firm mattress tended to have more pain after one month, and found it more difficult to sleep during the night.

The authors of the study noted that both the foam mattress and the water-bed shape themselves around the body's natural curves, placing joints under less pressure than harder mattresses.

Pen spinning champion named in Japan

A 16-year-old student from Japan has been named as the first ever pen-spinning champion.

Reports suggest that Ryuki Omura was named the champion of the strange sport after competing in a tournament in Tokyo over the weekend. The event was organised by the Pen Spinning Association of Japan and featured the 16 finalists chosen from 276 video entries.

The entrants were then asked to showcase their pen spinning skills, and performed a host of dazzling flicks, spins and throws. People were judged on their technique and artistry.

One of the organisers, Mitsuhiro Nakamata, clarified to the Reuters news agency what it was that the judges were looking for. "The most important thing is to make the combination of tricks as smooth as possible."

He added: "Pens are always around, so you can practice and enjoy pen-spinning anytime, anywhere. If we can find a sponsor, we want to take this contest international." According to the report, toy maker Takara Tomy has already released a pen specially designed for the young sport.

Why not have a look at this personalised ballpoint pen, you could use it for spinning or writing, the choice is yours. Enjoy.

Mothers Day

Mother's Day is fast approaching, falling this year on Sunday 2nd March – so get your skates on and shush……’mum's the word’. Say thank you with fragrances, a personalised gift or a selection of cosmetics on this special day.

Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent - three weeks before Easter Sunday. The celebration is believed to have originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one's mother church annually, meaning most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. It is now principally used to celebrate and give thanks for mothers, although it is still recognized in the historical sense by some churches.
