The fashion week runways are known for being at the cutting
edge of style, with over the top outfits, dramatic makeup and high-end designer
price tags. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use key elements and trends
from the runway to inspire your outfits. Check our guide for using fashion week
trends to revamp your wardrobe.
Animal Print
Animal Prints have been going strong for a number of years,
and this year the runway shows at New York Fashion week took animal prints to
another level entirely, mixing bold neon colours and contrasting prints in
stunning high fashion looks. Many designers including Tom Ford,
Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein and Victoria Beckham showcased collections that featured animal prints.
Style tip:
Leopard print
can add a glamorous edge to your outfit, but to avoid Eastenders vibes keep it
smart and classic. Team a leopard print coat with a staple black dress and
heels to add a great focal point to your outfit, or team it with denim jeans
and smart pumps for an effortlessly cool smart-casual look. Gold accessories
work well with leopard print, but keep them minimal, and team with tried and
tested colour combinations such as monochrome and red.

Denim
Denim remains a
style staple, both on and off the catwalk. Many designers including Ulla
Johnson,
Matthew Adams Dolan and Derek Lam all
included denim looks at New York Fashion week. From statement jeans to full
denim ensembles, it’s unsurprising that denim is still a presence in many
runway shows.
Style tip:
Don’t
be afraid to go double denim. (No, I don’t mean like 2001 Justin Timberlake and
Britney Spears – let’s leave that one behind!) Wearing denim in differerent
shades and washes can actually look flattering and stylish as long as you don’t
go too overboard. An easy double denim look is to pair a lighter denim shirt or
jacket with slim fit darkwash jeans. Be sure to stay away from matching denim
accessories and complement your look with a pop of contrasting colour or a
staple white t-shirt.

Bold Metallics
The metallic trend has been present on the runway for a
number of seasons. This year’s New York Fashion week saw designers including Sally
LaPointe, Cushnie
Et Ochs and Jeremy Scott showcasing metallic looks.
Style tip:
Use metallic accessories to accent any outfit. A
metallic bag or shoe is a great nod to the metallic trend, without going all
out. If you’re wearing metallic pieces, stick to one key statement item, and break
up blocks of silver and gold with contrasting clothing and accessories. Black
is classic and flattering, especially against gold statement pieces. Silver is
a great way to accent a neutral outfit, or use bright colours such as hot pink
and orange to vamp up your look and make a real style statement.
Studio recommends:
Embroidery
Embroidery is a versatile trend that doesn’t seem to be
dying down, and at New York Fashion week many designers featured embroidered
patterns and accents within their collections.
Style tip:
Use pieces with embroidery to elevate your
everyday outfits. A pair of jeans or boots with a cool embroidered detail will
instantly raise your fashion game. Once again, with any statement details less
is more, and given the right piece you have plenty of style options. Pair
embroidered skinny jeans with an oversized jumper for a stylish but casual
transitional look, or team with a staple white t-shirt and biker jacket for a
classically cool ensemble.
Also, don’t feel restricted to one style of embroidery in
your wardrobe. If you’re looking for a chic summery look that will transition
effortlessly from day to night, a plain top or dress overlaid with embroidered
floral details is both flattering and elegant.
Studio recommends:
Camo print
Camo was another popular print used by many designers such
as R13 and was showcased in a range of different clothing items, from oversized parkas
to jeans, shirts and accessories.
Style tip:
Camo prints are great for adding a cool edge to
your look, but keep it feminine by accessorising with classic silver or gold
jewellery. Choose one standout camo piece for your outfit, and style with
neutrals or a pop of bright colour, but avoid busy patterns or animal prints
that would clash and make the outfit too busy.
Statement bags
Unsurprisingly statement bags were seen far and wide at New
York Fashion week – although there was a huge range of styles and colours, bold
statement bags were popular both on and off the runway.
Style tip:
Go wild! A statement bag is a great way to show
off your personality. To really elevate your look, pick out one colour to tie
your outfit together – i.e. if your bag has blue tones, pick out a scarf with
similar hues for an effortlessly stylish look.
